Baby prints in clay - do it at home with an imprint kit.

clay footprintUsing the soft, air dry clay to create your keepsake is almost foolproof using a clay impring kit from Creative Casting.

All kits come with a frame, a pack of clay & a pink & blue back making them suitable as gifts or for our self.

As seen on The Apprentice they are a great keepsake idea that can be done quickly & easily - heres how.......

How to Create Your Clay Imprint in 4 Easy Steps

softening the air drying clay foready to use for the imprint

1. Soften your clay before using to make it as easy as possible to press baby's hand or foot in.

Be sure to have clean hands!

2. Roll out the clay on a piece of cling film using a rolling pin to no less than 1 cm thick.

Roll out on a board or tray you can take to baby rather than bring baby to the clay.

3. Press baby's hand or foot into the clay using firm & even pressure.

Make sure you have pushed each finger/toe into the clay as well as the full heel/palm.

4. Trim the clay to the shape required whilst it is still wet. Make sure it will fit into the frame.

Leave the imprint to dry for at least 24 hours before sticking it onto the backboard of the frame.

Frequently Asked Questions.....

Do I have to bake the clay once I have my print?

No - the clay is an air-drying clay that will go hard as the moisture in it evaporates so no need to heat at all.

How long does the clay take to set - how many times can I roll it out?

You should be able to roll the clay at least 6/7 times but it will pick up dirt every time you re-roll it so do be careful. If the clay starts to dry out through handling you can spray it with a very small amount of water & then knead thoroughly to work the wetness back into the clay. If you need to stop & try again another day, put the clay back into the air tight grip seal bag it came in to keep it moist.

Why roll out on cling film?

It keeps dirt off the clay in case you need to re-roll & also allows you to lift & move your nicely rolled out piece easily.

My clay has curled up when it dried out - why?

You most probably rolled the clay out thinner than 1 cm. This makes the clay more likely to bend as it dries. Keep the clay as thick as possible to avoid this - at least 1cm thick is advised.

I don't seem to get a good imprint - it's not very deep...

You need to press down on each toe/finger separately to get a really good imprint & have the clay supported on a firm surface. Two people are useful so one can hold baby & the clay whilst the other makes sure the hand or foot is well pressed in. The softer the clay is before you start the better so ensure you have kneaded it well to begin with.

How do you stick the clay print into the frame?

Glue for mounting the print is included in all kits. Once stuck in place, leave the back out of the frame for 24 hours with a heavy book placed on top of the clay to ensure it is well stuck before displaying on the wall.
